Texas Food Stamps - SNAP

What used to be called Texas Food Stamps is now the SNAP food benefits. Texas SNAP helps people with low incomes buy the food they and their families need to maintain good health.

Texas Food Stamps (SNAP) benefits are most often given to a single person - or family - who meets the SNAP's requirements.

Health and Human Services Commission sends a renewal application to a family getting SNAP benefits before the end of each period.

Most SNAP benefit periods last for six months but some can be as short as one month or as long as three years.

For the most part, adults the age of 18-50 who do not have a child at home SNAP benefits are limited to three months in a 3 year period. The benefit period can be longer if the adult works at least 20 hours a week and/or is in a training program. Some people, such as those who have a disability or are pregnant may not have to work to get SNAP (Food Stamps).

Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) gives SNAP benefits through the Lone Star Card. This is a plastic card that's used just like a creditcard at the cashregister to pay for food purchases. Each and every month the family’s approved monthly SNAP money is placed on the card.

If you need help filling out an application for SNAP, you can visit an HHSC benefits office near you or contact a community group that works with HHSC. You also can call toll-free 2-1-1 for help.

SNAP Benefits in an Emergency

Emergency Food Stamp or SNAP benefits are also known as expedited SNAP because the benefits are given faster to those in an emergency situation. For example:

  • A family that has less than $100 - and a monthly income of less than $150.
  • A family with cash and monthly income that are less than the most recent monthly expenses for rent/mortgage and utilities.
  • A family that includes a migrant or seasonal farm worker who has $100 or less in resources and very little income.

To apply for emergency SNAP, visit a HHSC benefits office or call 2-1-1.
