If you qualify for Medicaid and are searching for inexpensive housing, you may qualify for government HUD housing - or Section 8 low income housing.

Section 8 housing is usually apartment-type housing that is subsidized by the government. You pay rent according to what you can afford, and the United States government pays the difference. Section Eight housing must be applied for separate from Medicaid, as it is another service that is not linked to Medicaid. You must have a very low income to be eligible for Section 8 housing.

If you qualify for Section 8 Housing then expect to be placed on a very, very long waiting list. If you are a senior with a low income who is looking for senior housing for the future, you need to apply for Section 8 housing well before you need it and be ready to move in when a space becomes available.

Medicaid and the section 8 housing choice voucher program are two totally different programs. Leaving one does not disqualify you from another.

Project-based subsidized housing

Project-based subsidized housing are for low-income individuals and some are exclusively for the elderly.  They may offer support services such as meals and transportation.  You need to apply directly to the complex where you are interested in living.  Under this Program, the amount of your rent is usually ten percent of your monthly gross income or 30 percent of you income after allowances, whichever is greater.

Project-based Section 8

is a program that helps people with low-income get affordable housing.  The phrase "Section 8" can be confusing though, because there is another, very different government program that’s also called "Section 8."  In that Section 8 program, you get a voucher from a Housing Authority in Texas that you can use in many different housing developments.

Project-based Section 8 is very different.  If you get assistance through Project-based Section 8, you have to live in a particular housing development.  As soon as you leave that development, you are out of the program.

Texas Section 8 Housing

The Texas Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program provides rental assistance to low income individuals and families, including the elderly and persons with disabilities. The section eight program provides financial assistance for decent, safe and sanitary housing to eligible households. Whose annual gross income does not exceed 50% of HUD's median income guidelines. HUD requires 75% of all new households admitted to the program be at or below 30% of the area median income. Eligibility is based on several factors, including the household's income, size and composition, citizenship status, assets, medical and childcare expenses. Qualified households may select the best available housing through direct negotiations with landlords to ensure accommodations that meet their needs. TDHCA pays approved rent amounts directly to property owners.

The Department is one of several different public housing authorities that run Section 8 programs across Texas. Each public housing authority covers a specific service area. However, Section 8 is not available in all areas of the state. Review HUD's list of Texas Public Housing Agencies or the Texas Housing Association’s directory for contact information for Texas PHAs.
